History

About 31,000 people belonging to different races live in this area, and the main source of income here is tea cultivation. Paddy cultivation is also widely spread in this area, and rubber coconut and kuru `du plantations are also found.
The administration of this jurisdiction was under the village council system, and two village councils, Ne`phawa and Dellawa, existed until 1981. Later, the Galle District Development Council was established on 01.07.1981 by the Development Council Act No. 15 of 1980. Under that, it was run under the name of Nephawa Development Council School and Dellawa Development Council School in this jurisdiction.
After that, from 01.01.1988, through the Local Council Act No. 15 of 1987, the Nepawa Regional Council and the Dellawa sub-office were established under it. At that time the governing powers of the local council were under a special commissioner.
Later on 01.06.1991, the local government bodies came under the control of a group of elected representatives. Accordingly, according to the will of a majority of the people in the jurisdiction, the chairmanship of the United People’s Front was decided by K.A. Mr. Dhanasena became. There, the full executive powers of the council were vested in the chairman.
