According to the Extraordinary Gazette Notification issued by the Southern Provincial Commissioner on 04.06.2025 for Local Government Institutions that did not obtain 50% in the Local Government Elections held in the year 2025, The appointment of the Chairman and Vice-Chairman was held today (17.06.2025) at the Neluwa Pradeshiya Sabha meeting hall under the patronage of the Southern Local Government Commissioner.
First, the Commissioner briefed the 16 elected members of the Neluwa Pradeshiya Sabha and the gathering. Thereafter, the process of selecting the chairman was carried out and two names were proposed. (R.G. Ajith Chandana from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya side and Kanishka Edirisinghe from the Jathika Jana Balawegaya side)
Since one party proposed an open vote to elect the chairman and another proposed a secret vote, a secret vote was held to decide which voting method would be used to elect the chairman.The result was that 6 votes were cast in favor of holding a secret ballot and 10 votes were cast in favor of holding an open ballot.Accordingly, an open vote was held and the Commissioner informed that Mr. R.G. Ajith Chandana, who had contested from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya Party, was elected as the new Chairman of the Neluwa Pradeshiya Sabha with Mr. Kanishka Edirisinghe receiving 6 votes and Mr. Ajith Chandana receiving 10 votes.
Later, the election of the Vice-Chairman was held and two names were proposed there. (The name of Mr. H.K. Thilak Kumara, who was elected from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Party, and Mr. Nandasiri Gunathunga, who was elected from the National People’s Power Party) Since both an open and a secret ballot were proposed, a secret ballot was held to decide which method of voting would be used to elect the Vice President. The result was that 6 votes were cast in favor of a secret ballot and 10 votes were cast in favor of an open ballot. Accordingly, an open vote was held to elect the Vice-Chairman. The result was that Mr. Tilak Kumara received 10 votes and Mr. Nandasiri Gunathunga received 6 votes. Accordingly, Mr. H.K. Thilak Kumara, who was elected from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Party, was appointed as the new Vice Chairman of the Neluwa Pradeshiya Sabha. This was announced by Mr. R.G. Ajith Chandana, who was appointed as the new Chairman.
The new Chairman and Vice Chairman assumed office in the afternoon of the same day, amidst the blessings of the Maha Sangha. A large number of parties, including senior politicians, participated in this event.
